Apple Music Monthly Replay

The end of each year has become a deluge of metrics from all of our favorite services, with everything from Spotify (which is the first one to do it that I’m aware of) to WakaTime telling us all about what we watched, listened, and worked on through the previous year.

Not content to wait until the end of the year, though, Apple has now started to provide a monthly report for Apple Music users. Users can track various milestones by month rather than having to wait until the end of the year.

Along with things like the screenshot above for top artists, songs, and albums, it’ll also report on things like how many artists and songs you’ve listened to for the month and how that adds up over the year.

Of course, astute Apple Music users likely realize that this is, in fact, what Apple had already been doing. Going to your Apple Music Replay at any point during last year, for example, would showcase the same kinds of milestones; the difference is that now much more attention is being drawn to it, and the metrics viewed are selectable by month.

While it seems like a simple change, I’m admittedly fairly happy with it. I was the kind of nerd who did spend time looking at my Replay throughout the year to see how many artists and songs I had listened to, for example, so having more concrete divisions by month just makes it easier to look at.

On the flip side, I could see people wanting to avoid that type of information because they like to be surprised at the end of the year. I don’t really see this as a problem, though, because those users just have to avoid going to the Replay site; none of the metrics are actually shown in Apple Music itself.
